Thomas Rosewell Girle born C1830 North Shields Northumberland England  was my ancestor and his mother was Mary Martha Girle the sub matron at the Queens Female Orphan's  School

The family arrived in Tasmania on the 3rd February 1836 and Mary Martha Girle took her position at the school. 

The family moved to Launceston following issues with Mr Gazard and the corporal punishment of the young boys in the Male Orphan's school by the cat of nine tails administered by Mr Offer who was the assistant Headmaster at that time. (recorded in the local Newspapers)

Mary Martha Girle and her three children Samuel Rosewell Girle, Thomas Rosewell Girle  and Mary Anne Girle (also listed in the Orphans 's school) moved  to Launceston where she taught at the Frederick St Infant's School in Launceston. Both she and her daughter ran the school  from 1839 -1847  Mary Martha was to marry a James McLeod in1848 and was no longer elligible to work as a teacher. Her daughter and later her son Samuel were listed as teachers at  Cressy and Bishopsbourne

Thomas Rosewll Girle became a saddler in Launceston later marrying 1849 in Victoria a Mary Gillan They returned to Launceston where four of their children were born between 1850 -1856. The family moved to Moonie Ponds and later Geelong where a daughter was born in 1857

He family moved to Sydney, Walcha and Armidale. Thomas continued his saddlery and harness making  trade in these places eventually setting up his business in Ottho Street Inverell NSW in the late 1870's

He employed five people in his business He was to died 15th April 1901 in Glenn Innis NSW

Thomas Rosewell Girle and his wife Mary Gillan had a daughter in 1851, Mary Martha Girle who subsequently married into the Flegg family from which my mother was a Flegg.
