Claimed from the Orphan Schools

William Powell

William Powell jnr, was probably born during March of 1825 while his mother Eliza was incarcerated in Exeter prison, as his baptism is recorded as being on 1 April 1825 at St David's Church, Exeter.

William, reportedly aged 25 (actually aged 28) married Mary Ann Brown(e), reportedly aged 20, at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Hobart on 7 September 1853.
The origins of Mary Ann Brown(e) have not been positively confirmed, although family lore is that she was an Irish famine orphan and refugee who arrived in VDL circa 1851 at the speculated age of 17; from Limerick in Ireland.

William and Mary Ann would successfully raise a family of nine children and play a significant role in their local Swanston, Woodsdale and Whitefoord communities. William died at Swanston on the 5th March 1880, and his wife at Whitefoord on 29 December 1923.

William, his parent's and his own family's known full biographical details can be reviewed at - https://vandemonian.info/william-powell-mary-ann-browne
