Agnes Buxton, my Great Great Grandmother, was born 16/4/1817 at Tissington Derbyshire Eng. to Thomas Buxton and Ellen (Bott). The Buxtons with 5 children arrived in Hobart as free settlers on the Westmoreland on 5/5/1821. Thomas was employed by William Talbot and selected the land at Great Swanport which Talbot named "Malahide" (now Belmont). One can only imagine why two of his daughters, Sarah and Agnes, were placed in the Queen's Orphan school. Their ages at admittance are both 2 years under what they would have been according to the admittance date. This could be a timing error of the entry. Agnes and Sarah may not have spent a great deal of time in the Orphanage as they grew up at "Mayfield" their parent's property at Little Swanport.
Agnes went on to marry convict Thomas Poole "Barossa" and they had a family of 3,George, Sarah and Matthew, before Agnes died at the young age age of 36.
The Buxton's life story is published in my book "From Hell to Paradise" which is available at the Swansea History Room or by contacting me at "splashpoole@yahoo.com.au".
