13th Annual Report 16 August 2020
It is a privilege to present the 13th Annual Report of the Friends of the Orphan School, St John's Park Precinct. The Friends of the Orphan Schools, St John's Park Precinct, was founded at a public meeting held in St John's Church, New Town, on 14 December 2007. It was officially launched on 20 May 2008. Since that time, the Friends of the Orphan Schools, with the support of its members and the community, has gone from strength to strength.
At the Annual General Meeting held on 18 August 2019, the following were elected:
Convenor:
Dianne Snowden
Deputy-Convenor:
Secretary:
Jane Hodgman
Web Secretary:

Treasurer:
June Joiner
Membership Secretary:

General Committee:

Ex-officio members:
St John's Church: Bill Stewart
Ogilvie High School: vacant
New Town Primary School: vacant
Your Committee has worked conscientiously and diligently throughout the year on your behalf. Without the Committee, there would be no Friends of the Orphan Schools. I thank them all very much for their energy, enthusiasm and support. Our Treasurer, June Joiner, will be retiring from the Committee this year. June has done an outstanding job as Treasurer and Membership Secretary, as well as helping with catering for our events and tours. Thank-you very much, June, for your contribution and commitment.
At the 2019 AGM, our guest speaker, Alastair Scott, gave an interesting and informative presentation on 'The Life Courses of the Point Puer Boys who remained in Van Diemen's Land and connections with the Queen's Orphan Schools.' The presentation included discussion on the assignment of Point Puer boys to the New Town Farm.
Many of our activities have been curtailed as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions.
Fox's Feast was held on 23 February 2020. Guest speaker was well-known author and historian, Dr Alison Alexander, who spoke about Lady Denison and her involvement with the Orphan Schools. A highlight this year was the 'Taste of Fox's Feast', organised by our Secretary, Jane Hodgman.
In the last part of 2019 and early 2020, our Tour Guides, Jane Hodgman and Richard Watson, undertook several tours and I thank them for their commitment and dedication. Tours have not yet resumed.
A Special General Meeting was held on 4 March 2020 to consider a special resolution to approve our new constitution. This was successfully passed and the Friends of the Orphan Schools received its Certificate of Incorporation on 2 July 2020.
Finally, thank-you to our members and supporters, who share an enthusiasm for the history of the Orphan School children and St John's Park Precinct. I look forward to working with you again during the coming year.
