Janet McDonald was born to convict, Janet McDonald in 1832. Janet Snr was granted a ticket of leave but had it recinded in 1834 when arrested and jailed. This is when Janet Jnr was placed in the Queens Orphan School. Janet Jnr's father is unknown. Janet Jnr remained in the school until the age of 12 years, when she was released to Philip Smith, a land owner from Ross, a great benefactor of the Orphan Schools. He campaigned for better wages for the teachers at the schools as well as fund raising in general.
I believe that Janet McDonald (Jnr) married William Chilcott in Morven (Evandale) in 1849. Chilcott was bornin Cornwall, England and was an early settler with his brother Charles.
William and Janet had 16 children, 13 of whom survived infancy. One of them was my Great Great Grandfather Alexander Travers Chilcott.
