Emily was born at the Cascades Female Factory to to Margaret Maynard.  Margaret had a second child there, still-born in 1857 and she married Patrick Huon Brennan at St. Georges Church of England, Battery Point in 1858.

Emily married Robert Brown at Hamilton on 28 Feb 1876 and they had around 15 children.
