Henry was the son of my 3 x great grandmother Grace Rice (has Ann Rice on file SWD 26/6/1863-No.13 - this is incorrect) and his father was Francis Fardell (aka John Smith a convict from the "Baropa" arrived VDL 1842 and a shoemaker). Grace Rice didn't appear to want her son as she and my 3 x great grandfather John Rice, had four young children themselves and she refused to take him.
Henry and his sister Frances (whose mother was Ann Vickers/Murphy who died 1861 in Hobart) were put into the orphanage after the death of their father in April 1863. Henry was transferred to the Brickfields in Hobart in 1870.
Francis Fardell left a Will in which half of his 30 pound estate went to his housekeeper, Sarah Ridley and the other half to his children Henry & Frances (Fanny) Fardell. Henry is probably the Henry Fardell who died in 1876 at the New Norfolk Hospital for the Insane aged 24 years and a pauper.
