James Forest was actually James Forrest. He was born out of wedlock in 1839. A biological father has not yet emerged from the shadows! James' mother Janet Forrest married John Grayson/William Butterworth - who took the Wm Butterworth name to spare his first wife the public disgrace of being married to a convict. They had several more children, however William died relatively young. Though James either took or was given the Butterworth name, he did not live with his mother and step-father. Janet retrieved her son from the orphanage when William died. James went on to marry three times and have many children. He emigrated to New Zealand after the death of his first wife. He owned The Old Curiosity Shop in New Plymouth and became a most respected purveyor of Maori artifacts and was deeply respected by Maori. https://www.tepapa.govt.nz/sites/default/files/tuhinga.16.2005.pt7_.p93-126.day_.pdf
