Ellen was the daughter of John Barefoot and Elizabeth Church, both ex convicts arriving around 1809/1811 in Austrlia. Ellen was the fourth youngest of 9. It would appear that in the mid 1820's the family was likely living in a squalid environement and that the parents unfortunately could not care for the children, it looks like there were 4 other siblings in state care at the time.
