Elizabeth Hughes was daughter to two ticket-of-leave convicts – Richard Hughes and Margaret Brennan.
Margaret Brennan and Richard Hughes are my Gx3 Grandparents on my father’s side.
Richard Hughes was originally from Clapham, Gloucester. He arrived in Van Diemen’s Land on convict ship, Asia (II) in 1838. He was sentenced to transportation for life for stealing a sheep.
Margaret Brennan was originally from Scotland. She arrived in Van Diemen’s Land in 1842 on convict ship, Waverley. She was sentenced to seven years’ transportation for larceny.
Margaret Brennan died of consumption aged 38. Richard Hughes was working as a shepherd in Illarwarra for Edward Dumaresq. It was decided it was not fitting for a young lady to be raised by a convict father whilst working on the land. Dumaresq sought a place for Elizabeth in the Queen’s Orphan School.
Elizabeth’s brother, John Brennan Hughes, is my GG Grandfather. John Brennan married and raised five children including my Great Grandfather, Albert Henry Hughes. Albert served in Gallipoli and on the Western Front during WWI.
