Mary Georgina Meredith was born at Campbell Town 1856 but registered under her mother's name of ANN CHRISTY (note spelling). Ann is listed as 'single' and no name given for the child. This birth is prior to her parents’ marriage and about the same time as her supposed father George Meredith received his Conditional Pardon in 1856.   It has been said among the family that Georgina 'died young' but nothing has been discovered to verify this. This comment about an early death was in a letter I received in 1988 from a Margaret Meredith from Queensland. She is descended from John Robert Wilfred Meredith who went to Queensland with his mother - the only child of the three born to Ann Robertson Christie. Why Georgina and Alexandrina were left behind has not been discovered or who they were left with is also not known.

It is only assumed that George Meredith was the father of Georgina - although given the child's given name she could have been named after her father George. There are several mentions re Victorian police gazettes of a Georgina Meredith from Tasmania. Again, whether it is the same Georgina Meredith is hard to ascertain.

Another area of concern regarding the name, apart from no name mentioned on her birth, is the fact that on the burial plaque for her mother (in Queensland) it mentions mother of "Mary" and then goes on to give the other names which are all correct. So was her name Georgina or Mary?? - see photo.

There is an entry on the 'Orphans School' web site of a GEORGINA MEREDITH date discharged 1872 (no mention of when admitted and no name for mother or father other than to say "discharged to ?Ross" and parents said to be "IN QUEENSLAND and NEW ZEALAND.

Her parents have been discovered - Mother moved to Queensland and remarried in 1872 to a James Kean but did not leave with her mother or brother John Robert Milfred Meredith who was born in 1862.

Her sister, Alexandrina Meredith also stayed behind and married in John William Brain in 1880.

Her father has been discovered in New Zealand where he died in 1877 well after the marriage of his wife. No divorce has been found, nor when he left Tasmania to go to New Zealand.
