Son of John Thorburn Macgowan, Chemist, of 80 Murray Street, Hobart. J.T. Macgowan moved to Victoria where he had chemist shops in Ballarat and South Melbourne. He married Annie Wynne. J.T. Macgowan was brother in law to Dr Thomas Christie Smart via his sister Agnes Newall McGowan and arrived in Australia with his family (father Rev. James McGowan) in 1839 via the Planter.
