William, the son of Hannah Sandles, was aged 8 when his mother was committed to prison for murder. William was placed in Chailey Union House.
He sailed on the Anna Maria with his mother and sister Eliza on 4th October 1851 arriving in Hobart on 26th January 1852.
William was then transferred to the Queens Orphanage on 1st February 1852. aged 10 years. He was discharged to his mother, who had a ticket of leave, on 28th October 1854, aged 12 years.
On 12th May 1864 William married Mary Anne Schenk at his sister's (Eliza Stevenson) residence at 88 Melville Street, Hobart. He classed himself as a shop man.
They had 3 children
William died at Sorell on 30 January 1872, aged 30 years. The cause of death was Phithitis (TB) His occupation at time of death was Hawker.
William's children all died in 1876 with Diphtheria:
William’s wife remarried in 1874, to Thomas Riley of Bream Creek.
