Eliza Smith was the child of Emanuel John Henry Smith & Honora Leahy. Her father was transported from Suffolk, England for housebreaking - arriving VDL on the 'Westmorland' 1841. 10yr sentence. He received his Free Certificate 1850. Her mother was Mrs. Honora Leahy, transported from County Cork, Ireland for stealing material. She arrived VDL on the 'Midlothian' 1852. Free 1859.
Birth registration: "Eliza Smith; b. 14/5/1855; female child; Oatlands district; father - Emanuel Smith; mother - Honora Leah (should read Leahy); ref. 1256/1855-33" (Tasmanian Pioneer Index BDM). Eliza's parents were married at the Chapel, Jerusalem, Tasmania 1854. The family lived in the Oatlands district, with her mother Honora Leahy/Smith dying there 1903 and her father Emanuel Smith in 1904.
Eliza's brothers Henry Emanuel & George Thomas were also admitted to the Queens Orphan School on the same date (29/04/1864). No date or details are recorded for their discharge.
Eliza married Michael James Hannon-Smith 15/4/1873 Brighton, Tasmania. There are registrations for 13 Smith children.
Eliza died 1917 aged 62yrs. "Death: SMITH.-On June 3, 1917, at Oatlands, Eliza, the dearly beloved wife of Michael Smith, of Mount Pleasant, York Plains, aged 62 years. The Funeral will leave on Tuesday, June 5, at 2.30 p.m. for St. Peter's Church." Mercury newspaper 4 Jun 1917.
