Henry Emanuel Smith was the child of Emanuel John Henry Smith & Honora Leahy. His father was transported from Suffolk, England for housebreaking - arriving VDL on the 'Westmorland' 1841. 10yr sentence. He received his Free Certificate 1850. His mother was Mrs. Honora Leahy, transported from County Cork, Ireland for stealing material. She arrived VDL on the 'Midlothian' 1852. Free 1859. Birth registration: "Henry Emmanuel; b. June 1857; male child; Bothwell district; father - Emmanuel; mother - Honora Leahy; ref. 24/1857-33" (Tasmanian Pioneer Index BDM). Henry's parents were married at the Chapel, Jerusalem, Tasmania 1854. The family lived in the Oatlands district, with his mother Honora Leahy/Smith dying there 1903 and his father Emanuel Smith in 1904.
Henry's brother George Thomas & sister Eliza were also admitted to the Queens Orphan School on the same date (29/04/1864). No date or details are recorded for their discharge.
Henry Emanuel Smith married Mary Ann Greenwood 1/1/1881 Brighton, Tasmania. There are birth registrations for 7 children, all in the Oatlands district.
Henry Emanuel Smith died 21/1/1930, aged 80yrs. SMITH.- 'The funeral of the late Mr.Henry Emanuel Smith will leave the Roman Catholic Church, Oatlands, at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 24, for interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Oatlands. Mercury newspaper 23 Jan 1930.
Henry is a relative (not direct) via the Smith/Ellis/Axton line.
