John Brown is the third son of Robert Brown and Mary Morgan. He was born at Black Brush near Broadmarsh and seems to have lived his whole life in the region. As a young man he took up employment on a property called Strathbarton, Apsley, and worked as a farm hand on this property till his death. He married Sarah Cox in 1882 and their family were raised at Strathbarton, attending the Strathbarton property school and the Strathbarton chapel. His daughter Esther is my great grandmother. There was once a photograph of John Brown, driving a plough pulled by two horses. He had a huge bushy beard almost down to his waist and was rumoured to be very good with animals. Unfortunately I have not succeeded in locating this photograph since the death of the relative who had it.
